Following discussions with stone suppliers in Italy, we have discovered that Quartzite has overtaken granite in the volume of sales. As a result, Dynamic Contract Furniture have made the decision to add this impressive stone to our range. Below you will find information about Quartzite.

What is it?

Quartzite is a metamorphic rock made almost entirely of the mineral quartz. Beginning its life as sand grains, perhaps in on beach, desert dune or a riverbed, over time these grains become compressed and stick together to form sandstone. When sandstone is buried evermore deeply underneath layers of rocks, the sandstone increases in temperature and becomes even more compressed. With enough heat and pressure, the sand grains lose their original shape and fuse to their neighbours, forming a dense, durable rock.

What are the characteristics and benefits of Quartzite?

Quartzite provides the look of a marble but with the performance of a granite. This means that the material will not etch when in contact with acid. Etching is caused by acids dissolving small areas on the surface of a slab of stone. Whilst this process does not harm the stone or make it any less functional, it does blemish the stone surface. Another benefit of quartzite is its hardness and durability, measuring 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, quartz is nearly twice as hard as glass and harder than a knife blade.

Quartzite Vs Manufactured Quartz?

Quartzite should not be confused with manufactured quartz which is a manmade material, therefore it is a cheaper alternative to quartzite. The general makeup of manufactured quartz is approximately 85-90% quartz, 7% glue and 3-8% pigments.
